I heard about T4K from a friend 4 years ago. I was so impressed by the organisation that I contacted Jacob to ask if T4K needed access to short term accommodation. With our children having grown up, we had space to offer. I was encouraged to attend a general meeting and stayed involved since then. The fund raising events up until then had been relatively small so I suggested that we organise a ceilidh. The first T4Ceilidh was held in 2016. It was a huge success & I found myself heading up the fund raising events group. We hold several fund raising events a year which not only raise much needed money for the destitution fund, but help to publicise T4K and recruit more regular donors.
I am appalled by the hostile environment that currently exists in the UK and the increasingly xenophobic attitude that is being encouraged. My family history is one of migration. My family originated in Lithuania and Palestine and I was born in South Africa, migrating to the UK when I was 5 years old. I was fortunate to become a UK citizen and I now want to do what I can to support people who are fleeing persecution and terror or want to make a better life for themselves. I have felt so powerless in the face of the increasing intolerance and lack of compassion for refugees and migrants, but getting involved in T4K has been an opportunity to do something about it. It is a real pleasure volunteering alongside such committed, like-minded and concerned people.
